Biobehavioral physiotherapy

Biobehavioral physiotherapy integrates a modern understanding of biological, psychological, social, and behavioral processes to comprehensively address health. The principles underlying this approach are straightforward, effective, and based in the latest science.

There are no gimmicks, quick fixes, or empty promises to be found here. Through holistic, individualized therapy based on the following 3 pillars, I aim to equip you with the knowledge, physical capability, and mental resilience needed to live life in alignment with your values—unconstrained by pain.

Skillful perspectives 1

One of the biggest challenges in dealing with persistent pain is how we make sense of it. You might think, "If it hurts, there must be something seriously wrong," or "I need to avoid certain movements or activities to prevent more damage." These thoughts are completely natural, but they can lead to a cycle of avoidance and heightened sensitivity, which prolongs suffering.

On the other hand, some people take the opposite approach, trying to dismiss their pain entirely. You might think, "If I just ignore it and keep going, it will eventually resolve." A mindset of relentlessly pushing through can also trap you in a cycle that worsens pain and prevents recovery.

Through developing more beneficial (skillful) perspectives, we step back and recognize that pain is complex. It's not simply about "injury" or "damage"—pain is influenced by many factors, including how we think, feel, and respond to it. With the right knowledge, your pain will cease to be in control of you.

Gradual training 2

It's common to either stop doing valued activities because you're afraid of making pain worse, or push through until you can't tolerate it any longer. We help you break this cycle by finding a middle ground, setting specific goals and developing a concrete plan for achieving them.

We'll take gradual steps that progressively build your confidence and resilience in movement (and in life). Depending on your current situation and how you've been handling your pain thus far, this may involve modifying or temporarily abstaining from current activities, or adding new ones.

Controlled exposure (gradual training) is the most effective method for treating pain and injury, simultaneously improving your physical strength and mental stress resilience. It is the vehicle for getting back to doing things that bring joy and fulfillment to yourself and those around you, more than ever before.

Aligned living 3

Recovery from persistent pain isn't just about exercises or "treatments"—recovery includes reconnecting with your interests, goals, and core values. "Aligned living" means making intentional and meaningful adjustments to bring your daily actions in alignment with your wholesome, beneficial values.

Everyone's life is different, so we'll take the time to explore in detail how your current routines, habits, and environment might be maintaining your pain and suffering. This includes looking at areas like work-life balance, stress management, sleep quality, and personal relationships.

By gradually aligning your actions with wholesome values and intentions, you'll find yourself living a life that feels more authentic and less constrained by pain. Whether it's improving sleep hygiene or creating moments throughout the day for self-care, every change we make together is designed to support not just your physical health, but your total well-being and reduction of suffering.
